What do you do when your deepest wish comes true? Run outside and scream for joy? Shout from the rooftops? Or do you carry it around like a secret warm ember that lights you up from the inside?
I entered "The Future Unborn," "Drive to June," and "Hollow Beauty" in the Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards this year. The prize money was $8,000, and winning Writer's Digest would have been a real feather in my cap.
Sadly, I lost.
This week I received the judge’s comments on the books, though. They included the category ratings as well as a summary review of each book. The ratings were very high (two of the books received 5s in all but two categories). About the books themselves, the judge gave very nice reviews, which I had permission to excerpt:
The Future Unborn - “Wow! I love how you tackle really difficult subjects with grace and compassion. Once again, your characters are flawless." - Judge, 24th Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards
Hollow Beauty - "Standing ovation! Thank you for sharing your talents to help girls with their body image." - Judge, 24th Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards
Drive to June - "Your storytelling is superb. You tackle difficult subjects with style and grace. I can see your books helping many young girls with real problems that they face in their lives today." - Judge, 24th Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards
Losing doesn’t feel quite so bad when it sounds like that!
Tonight I’m optimistic about the New Year. Good things might happen. I have a new book ready. One person told me, “You have outdone yourself... This book is going to take you places, amazing places.”
I’m ready to go.
